In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media product?

Some indie genres now days have conventions of a glossed video, this could be through the media industry advertising the niche artist(s) to a mainstream audience. We however challenged this by making the video more realistic, not adding the gloss we wanted to focus more on the artist instead of the actual quality but to keep the audience attracted we added blue and yellow tints this is usually used for niche videos due to budget reasons.

While The Killers music video had a glossed finished through better cameras and editing, our music video was meant to have a rough edge which links to the indie genre.

Our conventions for indie pop clothing shows a laid back theme, we decided on t-shirts for everyone while Nuru (the main lead) and Minyee wear skirts Shennez wears jeans to conform with the skinny jean fashion.

The indie pop genre for example Operator Please in ‘Ping pong song’ shows the conventions of mute make up unless there’s a conceptual scene where the artist wants to show a different or more abstract side. Their hairstyle has a messy theme or has long fringes/ hairstyle. We conformed to this by keeping our bands hairstyle simple this helped by saving time for new shoots. Although their make up is mute they balance it out with vibrant clothing, for example this girl in the group is wearing a bright pink and orange cape, this is generally a theme of two to four colours.

Music videos use beauty shots to either etherises the persons beauty or emotions or dictates to the audience the main leader, this is mostly distinguish with a longer take one example is Florence and the machine ‘Rabbit Heart’ we focus on her from the fact that the shot is lightly lit with the background being unclear we focus more on the artist who is more clear becoming less distracted.

We went for the conventional theme of beauty shots where Nuru has the most time in front of the camera this is to demonstrate to mostly new audience of her role as the main leader.

We used glow sticks as prop’s to illustrate and amplify the word ‘RADAR’ to link with the title ‘Off the Radar’ we got this idea from the video ‘Glory days’ by just jack. The neon sticks reference to the eighties retro where people wore or showed bright colours in the video we also kept the theme of greens blues yellows and reds since it links to the chemicals in the test tube and the colour tints for the performance.

By singling the words one by one we make the audience reads and understands the connection visually and verbally.

This extract of ‘Glory days’ illustrates his movement linking to the t-shirt of superman the audience will understand and would see the funny side.

We challenge the gender roles by making Nuru more masculine at the science scene; we wanted to subvert the gender roles to dominate the fact that they are strong girls. We had gained this idea from Pink ‘Stupid girls’ where she justifies the fact that girls nowadays wants to become the new Paris Hilton instead of something bigger the decision was to make the science scene more animated then sexual this is to subvert the exhibition of woman and have a more relaxed feeling.

A Boo-hoo chick of pink this leads onto the next shot where it is President Pink.

The costume colours are bland of beige and white this subverts the fact that the male audience will see her more of an artist then a sexual object.

We challenged the indie genre by making the science performance more on Nuru then the whole band; this subverts the conventions of conceptual music where indie bands do both stories and performance for example vampire weekend.

These music videos mostly consist of conceptual narratives with some performance however compared Vampire weekend our group has subverted to this idea.

Star persona on The Gazette

The Gazette MV: Shiver

The music video demonstrates their star persona, for example the music is in mono colour/sepia mode, which signifies that the band is quite gothical like their visual kei style/look. This conforms to the generic conventions of the heavy metal genre because the use of sepia mode makes the music video serious and horror like, which also fits into their star persona.

The Mise en Scene is also used to represent the genre, for example the location is set in a remote area, which fit's into the horror theme and it illustrates the concept 'Shiver'.
At the same time the music video makes reference to the anime 'Kuroshitsuji' meaning 'Black Butler', which is about a demon who becomes a butler of a young boy, named Ciel but in return he must sell his soul to the demon. The anime is made up of different genres, such as horror, Supernatural, fantasy, which relates to the music video of making the audience feel 'Shiver' down their spine. This also helps to appeal to more audiences and build a wider fan base ie: People that read the manga, watch the anime.

The editing pace of the pace is quite fast, which matches the fast tempo of the music, this represents the star persona of the band because the the fast pace insinuate that they are very energetic, wild, upbeat, which conforms to the rock genre.

This is a poster to advertise their new album 'Shiver'. As you can see the idea of them cross promoting the artist is quite successful because they all carry the same star persona across/through all media promotion, which makes it recognisable for the audiences. For example the use of black and white again is linked to the music video and it also implies to the audiences that their music is just like the name of the album 'Shiver', which makes it quite gothical and horrorish just like their star persona.

Their star persona is also represented through mise en scene, for example their facial expressions displays a serious expression, which signifies to the audiences that their music is serious. At the same time the faces are kind of covered by shadows makes their persona more mysterious and attractive to female audiences.

Their visual image of their fashion sense also help to build a unique star persona, for example the visual kei style is a unusual look but it is a mainstream fashion style in Asia, which means that their music would appeal to a mass audience.

The use of the typography is used to represent the their star persona, for example 'Shiver', is in bold typography which signifies that the band group members stands out just like the letters and at the same time the typography is in white which stand out against the black background, which makes it ghastly.

This is the album cover for 'Shiver', as you can see the similarities between the poster, which spreads their image across so that audience recognise them. The typography 'the Gazette', looks gothical which is a convention to a heavy metal genre. It also helps to represent the artists/band image as being quite gothical. The images of the artists are displayed/positioned on the top, across the album, so that the audience would focus more on the image (hot spot).

This shows the similar use of typography, which makes references to the anime.

This is a image of the anime, as you can see the theme of black and white is also linked and the similar style of costume is evidence of the reference to the manga and where the style is deprived from.
